The way you hang your prints can make or break a room. If you get it right, you create an effect that will transform your house into a home.

How to hang 'em...

The first thing to think about when hanging several pictures together is how they relate to each other. The group should work as one and having a common theme is a good way to achieve this.

For instance, they could all:

· be the same size
· have a common subject - say flowers, people, landscapes
· be from the same art movement like Impressionist or Modern
· be mounted and framed to match
· have a common colour scheme - black and white photographs for    example
· have the same dominant colour, like blue, as shown below

If you have a collection of different shaped pictures, you can stop them looking muddled by arranging them in two rows. The top row hangs from one horizontal line and the bottom row stands on another. The sides should also line up.

Another good symmetrical effect is to hang one large picture and have a set of six small ones arranged three each side. To get them evenly spaced hang the large one, then a small one centrally each side. Position the other ones evenly on each side.

A set of four or six prints hung uniformly together can really pack a punch. Frame and mount them identically and keep them evenly spaced for a classic effect.

Common mistakes...

Hanging a picture too high
Pictures hung too high mean you have to crane your neck to see them and can leave you feeling very small. It is best to hang them at eye level, somewhere between standing and sitting eye level is best.

Hanging a picture on an empty wall
A picture hung on an empty wall often seems lost. It is better to place a picture above a table, sofa or another piece of furniture or feature such as a fireplace, to create a relationship between the picture and the room. However, a really big or bold picture can command an empty wall. Hanging a large picture low over a plain sofa is very pleasing on the eye.

Hanging all your pictures in the same position
If you hang all your pictures in the same position, say centrally over a piece of furniture, you create a boring display. Try hanging one or two off-center to create some interest.
